What prompted the service

“I will never set foot  in a public school classroom again . . .“ thus began an essay written after my first day as a substitute teacher.  “How many parents or politicians, have ever entered a public school classroom and seen what can really happen there,  especially when a sub is present”  I wondered?  The scene was total bedlam, reminiscent of a zoo with people running around shouting and fighting. In another school, a bottle was throw at a wall just inches from my head!

Not all schools are bad. There are some great schools where the staff have their act together, support their teachers, even their “subs” and provide the best education they can for their students. It was one such school that taught me that teachers, parents and students could work  together in a warm learning environment that induced me to enter the teaching profession full time.

“No child left behind” is a noble cause but it often results in classes comprised of students with very different achievement levels. Faced with sometimes thirty or more students any teacher is going to meet barriers when trying to communicate to such a diverse population. Bright students and those having problems are in a setting  that can only provide limited attention to their specific needs.

I believe that over ninety percent of discipline problems stem from student frustration.  “I just can’t do it” is a warning cry that often proceeds acting out in the classroom which requires time-out for discipline and less time for teaching. A self perpetuating cycle.

At HeartLands Teacher we know we will never get to all the youngsters and adults who’s quality of life could be improved dramatically by addressing their educational needs. But, we want to do our part.

How long must this student wait for the teacher to respond to her special needs?

What is happening at the back of the class?

Education is too important to waste whilst others wreck the system.
